About Tarifa
Tarifa, on Spain's southern tip where the Atlantic squeezes into the Strait of Gibraltar, is Europe's wind capital and blows hard for much of the year. Two competing systems drive it: the Levante, a strong, gusty easterly funnelled through the strait, and the Poniente, a cleaner west-southwesterly that comes onshore on the main beaches. That power and gust make Tarifa better suited to intermediate and advanced riders than to outright beginners, and conditions range from choppy bump-and-jump to real Atlantic waves depending on the beach.
The windiest stretch runs January through June, peaking in February at around thirteen kiteable hours a day, with a strong October making it close to a year-round destination. Summers stay windy but hotter and far busier. The nearest airport is Gibraltar (GIB), under an hour away, with Jerez and Málaga as larger alternatives feeding the wider Costa de la Luz.
